When it comes to the invitations for your summer BBQ, specify when they’ll be eating. Saying something like, “The grill master will be slinging grub from 6 to 7” instead of refrigerating the grill for latecomers is a bad idea. Come and get it!

Another important tip: let people know what to wear. Shorts? Tankini top? Sundress? “Bring your swimsuits!” or “You wear the flip-flops; we’ll flip the burgers!” give guests a sense of the atmosphere.

Determine the amount of food you’ll need. Pro tip: If you’re inviting people with food restrictions, create labels that list ingredients for foods that might be an issue, or walk them through the bar to let them know what they may want to avoid.

Concentrate On Ready-To-Eat Salads And Sides

Salads that don’t require much chopping and simple sides that can be made ahead of time and taste good at room temperature allow you to prepare everything ahead of time and simply set up the buffet for guests to help themselves to.

Make A Cool Dessert

Serve dessert cold at an outdoor summer party. You can always fill your freezer with premade ice pops and ice cream sandwiches, but it’s almost as easy to make your own, whether you opt for a super simple ice cream cake that comes together in minutes, or a just-as-easy ice pop.

Assume each of your party guests will drink 1 ½ alcoholic drinks per hour.

Hosting Over 25 Guests?

Plan to serve 2 ½ gallons of a pitcher-style cocktail to ensure the drinks keep flowing with the least amount of hosting effort. A stone fruit sangria made ahead is our favorite.

Create An Easy Upgrade For Mocktails And Nonalcoholic Drinks

Infused drinks are super easy to make—even if you don’t feel like squeezing lemons for a homemade lemonade or iced tea. Take fresh herbs, citrus slices, berries, or watermelon chunks, and place them in bottles of iced tea, lemonade, or even just water to elevate the drinks for everyone.

Overexert Yourself On Ice

Buy (or make) way more ice than you’d expect. You’ll need it to keep beverages cool in the cooler, for people to add to cocktails and drinks, and you can also use it to help keep more perishable food items, like dairy-based dips, chilled and safe. (Typically, experts recommend between one and two pounds per person, but for a summer party, we’d go closer to two pounds.)

Have Enough Seats

So you have 25 guests and only five patio chairs? Take a look at your furniture inside. Pressing dining chairs, drum stools, and poufs into service is the simplest option. If you’re keeping things casual, you can let people drop off and pick them up. Still in a bind? Ask party guests if anyone has a folding chair or two to bring along—just ask them to mark their set so you can get them to the rightful owner once the party’s over.

Hang String Lights Or Lanterns

Keep guests in the dark at all times. All you need is a little ambient lighting, says Jimmy Duhig, the owner of Creative Lighting Design in San Francisco: “If you’re outside while it’s getting dark, your eyes will adjust.”

Just hang strands of outdoor string lights on the deck, the fence, and even tree branches, and add some hurricane lanterns or tealights. Globe string lights and classy round bulbs with a warm glow are sur that, hammer them flush into the ground by arcing them over the cords.

Make Decor Double As Entertainment

Skip going overboard on decor and invest in a festive that doubles as an activity for guests. From flamingos to hula girls, they come in all shapes and sizes so you can fit the mood of your party.

Bugs are the best way to ruin a summer party. The biggest tip for keeping mosquitos away? Empty any standing water lurking in your yard. According to Cornell University associate professor of entomology Laura Harrington, “that’s where mosquitoes breed.”

The week before the party, empty out the kiddie pool, the rain gutters, and any rainwater that has collected in the bottoms of flowerpots. Light incense sticks that repel insects in glass jars and place them on tables around your yard just before the party.

Still worried? Make sure to have bug spray or insect repellent wipes on hand for guests who want some extra protection. “Look for products that contain the repellent picaridin instead of DEET,” says Harrington. “DEET can degrade synthetic fabrics, damaging clothing.”

Learn How To Master The Party Playlist

We tapped Michael Antonia, the owner of the Flashdance, a production company in Los Angeles, for his best playlist tips. He advises listening to a lot of songs from well-known artists like Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, the Rolling Stones, and the Beatles.

Keep it upbeat, and mix in some newer tunes here and there. Antonia says, “I like Bon Iver, Beach House, Elliott Smith, and White Stripes.” Additionally, prepare for five hours of playtime for your playlist. “Most parties aren’t going to last longer than that, and if there’s anyone who realizes the playlist has started over at hour six, well, they probably need another drink.”

Don’t Crank The Speakers

Yes, your playlist will be wonderful. However, if your speakers are blaring, no one will want to stand near them.

Best Setup Tip

The best setup is four or more speakers, spread out and set at a lower volume. According to Antonia, “place it above ear level if you’re using a boom box or an iPod dock so it’s not blasting directly at guests’ heads.”

Also, point it to the side of the house; you can make it a little louder, and the sound will spread out better there. Another option? Choose Bluetooth speakers, which are ideal for outdoor settings, and go cordless.

How can you get through the sweltering heat? Ice-cold compresses are a great hack. Another option: Hand fans or classic paddle fans are both available to buy in bulk and look pretty placed in a big basket.

Offering guests shade in the form of a temporary tent, a patio umbrella, or even just a sheet attached to poles or other structures is a good idea because sunburn is serious business.

Additionally, keep a few sunscreen tubes on hand so that people can reapply throughout the day.

An essential part of any outdoor party is gathering around a fire pit. Choose an easy-to-start model (we particularly like smokeless options like the Tiki and the Solo Stove) and preload the firewood to make starting it simple. (And don’t forget the marshmallows and s’mores!)

Use baskets as platters and bowls for serving, and adorn your table with fresh-cut garden flowers or potted plants and herbs.

I can both be near nature or stay in a hip, city metropolis with terrific meals and various cultures. I’m able to both have clean access to trekking trails or to music and movie galas. I can either detach myself from the whole lot in the mountains or be plugged into the virtual world with fast wifi.

As a digital nomad, I frequently experience like I’m able to’t have all of it.

However my current digital nomad stint in Cape Town changed that. On my whirlwind first trip to South Africa 5 years in the past, I knew it changed into a stunning metropolis. But I had no concept simply how much it might indulge and inspire me.

1. Hike Up Table Mountain On The India Venster Trail

You haven’t really visited Cape Town unless you’ve experienced the iconic Table Mountain. In case you’re moderately fit, skip the cable car and hike up instead – but not on the famous Platteklip Gorge path. Granted that’s the quickest route up the mountain, but also the most unexciting. Expect steps with no great views, no fynbos experience, no scrambling up loose rocks and no opportunities to spot wildlife.

We hiked up Table Mountain four times during our stay (it’s addictive!), and one of my favourite trails was the India Venster. It involves a fair bit of exposed trekking, followed by some rock scrambling, with stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean, the City Bowl and Lion’s Head all along the way!

We hiked up Table Mountain on the India Venster trail with Miles, a local licensed guide we found on Airbnb Experiences – and highly recommend him. The trail isn’t well-marked, plus the mountain can throw up lots of surprises and there is some reported crime in the area, so a guide is essential.

2. Cycle Up Chapman’s Peak (One Of The Best Activities In Cape Town)

You’ve probably heard of Chapman’s Peak Drive, but if you want to turn this stunning section of the road into a real adventure, pedal up instead! The road is steep and winding, the mountains beyond often enveloped in mist and the Atlantic Ocean roaring below. I’ll never forget the exhilarating feeling of riding up and whizzing down the road, with the strong wind and breathtaking views all around. A must-do in Cape Town.

Depending on your fitness level, you can use the motor assist feature of the e-bike to make your ride faster and easier. We booked this e-bike experience with Mhinti who works in the Imizamo Yethu Township near Hout Bay.

3. If You Dare, Hike Up Lion’s Head On A Route With Sheer Drops (But Not Without A Guide!)

We found ourselves at one of the starting points of the Lion’s Head trail on our second day in Cape Town. Blissfully unaware that our guide wasn’t leading us up the regular chains and ladder hike – but up a C-grade trail with rock scrambling, exposures and SHEER DROPS! Halfway through, my adrenaline was pumping so hard that I forgot I was only a misstep away from ending my trip (and life) right there. A mind-blowing and nerve-wracking experience – and in hindsight, the most insane hike we tried in/around Cape Town. Definitely not for anyone with a fear of heights.

I’ll refrain from revealing much about the route because this really isn’t a hike you should be attempting on your own + there are no trail markers. Book this one with Marius / Irmina, and message them beforehand that you have the heart for some adventure!

4. Kayak Along The Atlantic Coast At Sunset

Hugged by the Atlantic Coast, Cape Town’s magic is as much inland as in the water. The ocean is generally too cold to swim, but on a sunny day, head out to Sea Point or Hout Bay to kayak on the waves, in the backdrop of dramatic mountains, as the sun dips below the horizon and paints the sky in tones of pink and orange. Now can you see why it’s so hard to leave Cape Town?

5. Discover The Unique Fynbos In The Silver Mine Reservoir

The bush-like scratchy local flora of the Western Cape region (known as fynbos aka fine bush) is no ordinary vegetation. 

It is among one of the world’s smallest yet most diverse floral kingdoms – and a protected UNESCO site! Our very first introduction to the fynbos was in the Silver Mine Reservoir, a protected area not far from Kalk Bay – while hiking with Justin who calls the area home. Even though we found ourselves surrounded by clouds (and with no view), learning about the plant kingdom we had seen so often in Cape Town but never really observed was eye-opening! Silver Mine offers one of the easier, gentler hikes in Cape Town, perfect for pretty much every level of fitness. I highly recommend choosing Justin as your first “fynbos” guide – no one we met since matched his wealth of knowledge and passion for the fynbos.

Friends, I live in Houston, where the summer sun shines brightly until well after 8 p.m. Having a garden party at sunset rather than on a hot summer day makes perfect sense. Trust me when I say that even if you live in a cooler area, a nighttime outdoor event has a magical quality that will make your special occasion one to remember. So, invite people, choose a party theme, and let’s look at some ideas for outdoor summer parties!

Set Up And Decor

Lighting

Nothing screams outdoor soirees like fairy lights and mason jars with flickering candles. I highly recommend lining pathways with outdoor lights and hanging a lot of outdoor string lights to create the ideal atmosphere for your dinner party. You might already have these set up as permanent outdoor decor and it transitions so well as party decor as well. Lighting is such an important part of a night party – you don’t want it too bright outside (think motion sensor flood lights) or too dark either. Having tiki torches, overhead lighting, and possibly solar lights on the ground level, among other light sources, is a good idea.

Music

Take your bluetooth speakers outside before the event and make sure they’re fully charged! You never know by the end of the night the grassy lawn might turn into a dance floor! To fit the mood of the party, I like to prepare a music playlist in advance or select one from Spotify that has already been made.

Decor

There are so many great options for outdoor party decor that are unfussy and easy to do. Whether you scatter it across the middle of a long table or place it in a bowl, fresh fruit always looks so pretty. An inexpensive way to decorate your table is to weave in some fresh flowers. I would also make flower arrangements for the cake table if you were hosting a birthday party. Decorations with a theme You can add specific decorations to your party to set the mood, depending on the theme. Get some tiki torches and palm leaves to decorate your table for a tropical theme. Include lanterns and sheer fabrics like muslin and organza for a romantic atmosphere. You could also go all out and get a custom banner or one of those 360 photo booths! It’s not necessary to have a lot of trouble finding seats for your next outdoor gathering. It could be as simple as scattering throw pillows and picnic blankets across the lawn. Depending on the number of people attending, you could rent a few tables and chairs if you want to go all out. Floor cushions are the perfect solution for last minute extra seating.

Our go to outdoor party menu is always a summer BBQ menu. Think burgers, hot dogs, corn on the cob, some veggie skewers and grilled chicken pieces. I love that grilling doesn’t take much time to prepare and that you can have fun with guests while you cook. Preparing all of the meats and sides ahead of time will prevent you from running around at the last minute.

Pasta Salads

My go-to recipe for pasta salads is one of my excellent ones. These can be prepared in advance and simply taken out of the refrigerator when it’s time to set the table for dinner. This simple California pasta salad and this grilled asparagus orzo pasta salad are two of my favorite dishes.

Pizza

Pizza is always well-liked. You can get your pizza from your favorite pizzeria or set up a DIY pizza station where people can make their own pizzas. Provide a range of toppings and sauces, and if you have a pizza oven, it can become a fun interactive activity. The only problem is that most home pizza ovens are small and can only bake one pie at a time. I would serve it as a side dish rather than the main course.

Hosting a potluck dinner is something that my friends and I always do. Everyone brings two things and we all decide on a menu beforehand. When hosting a dinner party, one of the best ways to keep things simple is to do this.

We personally don’t drink so we’re always looking for yummy mocktails. I love Fresca mixed with black salt and lots of lime over ice lately! It is SO energizing. I’ve also tried this with a tajin rim and it would make the best signature cocktail for a summer party.

Board Games And Card Games

Prepare a table with a variety of card and board games. This provides a fun and interactive way for guests to mingle and enjoy each other’s company. Choose games that are easy to learn and can accommodate multiple players. Twister is a fun game that can be played outdoors.

A beverage tub filled with ice is perfect for keeping drinks cold throughout the night. Stock it with a variety of sodas, juices and bottled water. Make sure the tub is easily accessible so guests can grab a drink whenever they need one.

Batch Drinks In Carafes

In large carafes, make batch drinks like sangria, lemonade, or iced tea. This not only saves you from constantly refilling drinks but also makes it easy for guests to serve themselves. The carafes should be placed on a table with plenty of cups and ice for drinks. I use a large drink dispenser for parties, which I fill with ice, water, lemon and cucumber slices for energizing flavored water.

Guests of all ages will have a good time with these simple games. I personally don’t own any of these but they’re always a blast when we’ve played them at patio restaurants.

Glow-in-the-dark games like ring toss and capture the flag can also be set up, as can a dance party with glow sticks. I’m going to keep this idea for one of Zaki’s birthdays because I think both the kids and the adults will love it!
